Clash of the Titans – an abstract for Agile2011
I figured that I should start talking about my own agile experiences abroad this year. What better place to do this than the birth of the Agile Conference — Agile 2011 in Salt Lake City, USA.
“Agile has been the province for developers for the last decade. Designers, it seems, have only just caught up and are now learning how to integrate user-experience design (UX) into agile projects with concepts like ‘Time Travel’ and ‘Washing Mashine‘ in order to work ahead of sprints and stories. These methods, though, continue to create Waterfall-like divides with weak interaction points between design and development teams to create seamless, intuitive solutions. The result is a veritable clash of the titans — butting of heads, us vs them, designers complaining that agile is nothing more than a developers’ methodology and developers simply wanting to pair with users and get on with the job. What then is the solution? How can the imagination and mechanics engines of agile projects work in harmony?
“Matthew will relate his experience of a project run using the UX ‘Washing Machine’ method, Scrum of Scrums, the design and analysis collaborative methods employed, and its lessons learned. Moreover, he will relate how these issues created a need to explore a more effective means of collaboration and integration of ways of working that leveraged the strengths of UX user-centred design approaches with the power of Agile and Lean thinking. Specifically, the talk will include incorporating data-driven Personas into User Stories, creation of A3s from Lean thinking, and skinny documentation for traceability and sign-off gateways.”
You can comment on my proposed abstract to help me get a speaking slot by telling the organisers what you think of my ideas at the Agile 2011 website.
