User-centred design and prototyping

Presentation to the Australian Business Analysts Association (ABAA), 4 Nov 2007.

Storyboarding

This is an example of how movie-makers use storyboarding in their planning to ensure that their final product is the best it can be for its audience.

Business analysts can learn a lot from this tool. It’s a great way of communicating the intent of systems in a storytelling fashion, so that workflow and process can be accurately captured.

Prototyping and Previz

Like storyboarding, movie-makers use previz to work out complex concepts, inside a 3D computer environment, without having to build sets or shoot a single frame of film.

Business Analysts can do the same and learn from movie-makers by utilising these principles. Prototyping tools exist for previsualising systems in the same way.
